on an adventure, a voyage across the Atlantic on a sailboard named The Wanderer that is crewed by the cousins three uncles, as well as another cousin. The point of the voyage is to visit the childrens grandfather, Bompie, who has moved back to his native England. The following examination of this novel, first of all, looks at a timeline of events, then offers a description of the main characters, and closes with by relating ten examples of the authors use of sensory images. Timeline A time line for the novel is difficult to outline because neither Sophie or Cody seem very concerned with dates. Sophie does say that they planned to set sail the "first week of June, right after school ends" (Creech 8), but this was delayed because of the required repairs to the ship. It took two weeks of living in Uncle Docks cottage before the ship was ready to set sail. Their starting point was Block Island and the first leg of the journey was an expected sixteen-hour sail to Marthas Vineyard (Creek 38). They made great time and got their in just eight hours. The next leg of the journey was to sail across the Gulf of Maine to the Bay of Fundy and Grand Manan Island. From this point, The Wanderer sets sail for England. Sophie writes that, after a week and a half, they had traveled 1,300 miles and were over halfway there (Creek1 168). After numerous adventures and considerable hardship, The Wanderer arrives first in Ireland, and then sails to Wales, where the family leaves the ship and travels by land into England to see Bompie.
