The structure of the supply chain is the way it is made up, how many suppliers and links are involved, the type of organization and the way that the transactions take place. A supply chain structure can be limited to a small locality, but may also be global with goods and components traveling around the world. Tiering takes place where the supply chain is organized so that the suppliers operate in layers to save a buyer dealing with numerous suppliers and was first seen in the automotive industry. The first tier supplier maintains a relationship directly with the manufacturers, they will then deal with second tier suppliers who provide components or sub modules to the first tier suppliers, they do not have a direct relationship with the manufacturer. This is a tiered relationship it creates a hierarchy if management and control of the supply chain as the parts go though the layers. Question 2 Logistics are important as they deal with the way goods or services are moved around and get to the end user. Firms may compete using logistics in order to gain a competitive advantage. Effective supply chain management can help to create cost advantages, the use of logistics for incoming goods lead to Toyota gaining a cost advantage. Getting the goods to the end user is also important; companies such as Amazon rely on third parties to deliver goods, some companies may undertake deliveries themselves, as seen with firms such as florists.
