perhaps unsure as to what exactly steerage is, or was, for the immigrant. The following paper discusses and defines what steerage was for immigrant to the United States in years gone by. Steerage In the times of great immigration to the United States ships usually possessed different types of passage offered for travelers on the ships. There was normally first class, second class, and steerage in most cases. As would be expected, first class was for the wealthy and involved accommodations that were pleasant with great rooms, lots of space within the rooms, private baths, and many other amenities. Second class was not that much worse but was considerably less spacious and less glamorous perhaps. With steerage we have the worst possible conditions for anyone traveling on the ship, and there was even a difference upon arrival to the United States for people traveling in steerage. For those in first and second class there was only preliminary inspections of the individual and they were let off directly to New York. For those in steerage the destination was Ellis Island where extended inspections of persons and items was carried out. It was on Ellis Island that they were inspected to determine if they should be allowed into the United States. This simple information thus far illustrates that those people in steerage were, first and foremost, considered less than acceptable. This is because they did not have the money to come over to the United States in first or second class. This may well have meant that they were of little use to the culture of the United States and thus could ultimately cause problems in the society, ending up in one institution or another.
