the war between capitalism and communism was over and certainly, capitalism won. Today, capitalism is equated with the free market and great wealth. The obvious notion that communism failed has been seen in many countries, and especially exemplified by Russia today. The cold war is certainly over and capitalism does now seem to be the best way of running a government. What is capitalism exactly? Capitalism is an economic system whereby private ownership exists and the people possess their own natural resources and capital goods (McLeish 100). For example, things such as rent, interest and profit are given to private people who are owners; they effectively decide how to use their own natural resources and goods (100). While the concept is accepted theoretically, a true capitalist economy has never been effected in practice; that is, to an extent, there is some public ownership and decision making (100). While the United States is upheld as a fine example of a capitalist system, the truth is that as time goes on, it takes on considerable characteristics of socialism. From the continuation of Roosevelts New Deal to the point where in fact a Robin Hood world exists in America, to the cries of the poor that they do not have luxuries, to the managed health care system thrust upon the people, there are elements of socialism in the capitalist nation known as the United States of America. Communism and socialism are similar enough to be discussed as similar paradigms, at least in comparison with capitalism. The benefits of capitalism have always been given a great deal of lip service, particularly in the United States.
