He had an eye-opening experience, but by then, it was too late. During his journey though life, King Lear learned a great many things. In order to understand the play, these things must be analyzed. According to one source, King Lear is a morality play: "At first Lear is a man who is rich in wealth and friends and daughters. Unfortunately, those are the same things the Everyman could not take into the grave with him. King Lear has to shed his old robes of wealth and social status for the nakedness of his skin. The clothing he has represents the wealth that separates him from the real world--from truth. As a morality play, the lesson is clear. King Lear does not need all of his land, clothes, or others peoples acceptance of him. Money, wealth, and power are not the only things in life. He realizes that too late, but he does realize.
