Essay / Research Paper Abstract

This 5 page report discusses the idea that science does not yet have a full understanding of the universebut that technology will enable humanity to reach that understanding in the next few decades. The writer of this paper takes exception with such a statement and notes that as knowledge has increased and resulted in ever-advancing levels of technological capabilities, scientists have come to understand that earlier questions may have been too simplistic or too limited in the scope of what was being asked. scientific understanding expands, it seems increasingly likely that humanity will discover the answers to questions such as the size and age of the universe. It has become agreed upon that the universe is measured by how far light has traveled since the big bang and that density and other measurements depend on the size (Flamsteed 48). Astronomers and cosmologists have been trying to figure out the age of the universe since medieval times. Throughout history a variety of methods have been used, most recently the concept has been studied through measuring the universes rate of expansion from a presumed big bang origin. Another question has revolved around the missing mass in the universe and why gravitational mass equals inertial mass (Flamsteed 48). As humanity has advanced technologically, new and more complex systems of observation and measurement have been developed to establish a greater likelihood of establishing the "truth." For example, one of the principal justifications for building the space telescope that bears the name of famed astronomer Edwin Hubble was to pin down such unresolved and scientifically debated issues. Apparently, the data that have been pouring in from Hubble, terrestrial telescopes, radio telescopes, and scientific satellites are now at last holding out hope that an answer may soon be within reach (Cook 34). But it is important to remember that a rationalist approach to the whole of existence does not leave room for unexplainable mysteries in the universe. To assume that science has the power and ability to explain all phenomena takes away a part from the search for a reality above and beyond the explainable. Tools for Solving Mysteries Ostensibly, one of the great evolutionary differences between humankind and the primates has been based on a humans ability to invent and use tools. Because ...
