cat, a Himalayan hed had for 16 years (Lynch, 2007). He says, "I wasnt ready for another [cat], much less a stray," so clearly he was still in the grieving
process. Lynch, like most animal lovers, knows that the cat is a cat, not a person, but that doesnt make the emotions connected with pet owning-the joys, the fears when
medical tests are bad, the overwhelming sense of loss when they die-less important or less real because the object of love is not human. Lynch and Fritz bonded almost immediately
and enjoyed 11 years together, then a routine vaccination turned into a horror story. Cat sometimes develop cancerous tumors at the site of an injection, and although it is rare,
its devastating when it happens, because these tumors are aggressive and hard to treat. Injections were once routinely given in the back of the neck but are now more often
given in the leg, so that it can be amputated if a cancer occurs, thus savings the cats life (Lynch, 2007). When Fritz developed an injection-site tumor, Lynch had it
removed, and then had to decide what to do next: assume that the cancer was completely gone, or go ahead and have Fritzs leg amputated; neither was a good choice
