Race and religion have been allegedly viable reasons for personal attacks for as long as man has existed on the earths timeline. The extent to which these two defining entities serve to detract from an individuals inherent value as a person instead of enhance it is both grand and far-reaching; that racial and religious stereotypes reflect some of the harshest of all biased attitudes speaks to the level of social and political intolerance that still permeates the twenty-first century global society. As Lynn Duvall, author of Respecting Our Differences: A Guide to Getting Along in a Changing World, points out, "when we hear stereotypes and prejudicial statements often enough, we begin to believe them ... even when theyre about us" (Ezarik, 2003, p. 25). Racial and religious stereotypes not only impact how people view one another, but they also influence how people are predisposed to disliking a particular group because of categorization. Inasmuch as racial and religious stereotypes are both unreasonable and erroneous, such predisposed opinions about certain groups of individuals are often difficult to purge from the general public. For example, African-Americans and Latinos are often associated with being lazy troublemakers who have no moral judgment. Because a majority of crimes are committed by black and Hispanic males, society looks upon these specific people as unacceptable members whose agenda is to wreak havoc upon the community.
