Standing in lines for a reduced inventory of goods would be over. Or so the pundits thought. As the 1990s wore on, it was painfully clear that Russia needed a "how to" education in free-market economics. Things became worse than ever, with oligopolies rising in the stead of the state-controlled industries, and black markets gaining a huge foothold. By the late 1990s, the country was close to bankrupt (The Economist, 2008). The country wasnt helped by the debt crisis and devaluation of 1998 -- though the crisis did force the government to enforce fiscal discipline while removing constraints on the ruble (The Economist, 2008). These days, however, things have changed, and for the better. Entrepreneurs are getting a better deal, while the economy overall is growing at 7% per year (The Economist, 2008). Russias economy hovers around $1.3 trillion, with foreign-currency reserves of nearly $480 billion and a $144 billion stabilization fund for surplus oil and gas revenue (The Economist, 2008). Furthermore, the GDP per person has risen from less than $2,000 per year in 1998 to $9,000 10 years later (The Economist, 2008). According to a recent issue of The Economist, much of todays Russian economy is based on smoke and mirrors, partly boosted by oil prices that have risen to historic heights (The Economist, 2008).
