at first blush it seems immense. However, when one includes other factors into the consideration, factors such as race, ethnicity, can class, then women have not come as far as they would like to believe. What most of the ongoing studies seem to suggest is that for many women the work situations are bearable, but still not equitable. For those who are women of color, or from a lower socio-economic situation, things are not only less than equitable, but they are scarcely bearable. While there are still a great number of people who still chant the multi-cultural mantras, the stark reality of the matter is, multiculturalism is not an all inclusive term. In fact, women tend to be at a distinct disadvantage in respect to the practice of multiculturalism. In emphasizing the differences between the majority and minority cultures, multiculturalism focuses attention on those differences. Further, as diverse communities coexist within the state, multiculturalism raises the issue of their equality. It asks whether the different entities, constituting the many, are granted an equal status within the polity. In fact, in regard to a good number of cultural traditions involving women, multiculturalism would be quite harmful, if not demeaning to women. A woman who has been born into the majority culture and has been given the opportunity to proceed and succeed as far as she chooses, often seems to be reaching their goal, or close to it, moreso than those who have come from socially and economically challenged situations. Not only do the lack of opportunities come into play, but also the increase of day to day stresses on the young person.
