and Levin are considering several different approaches as to why there has been a rise in serial killings in the past decade: one approach accounts for the phenomenon in terms of internal factors which are specific to the killers themselves (abusive parenting, mental disorders, and so on), another considers changes in social morality, and another looks at societal and cultural factors, such as the influence of the media. They acknowledge that the rise may be due to a combination of factors, but also discount several of these as inadequate, on their own, to account for changes in the rate of serial killing. They note, for instance, that childhood abuse is frequently cited as significant, but that not only do many abused children not go on to become violent adults, those who do, often do not kill until well into their 20s or 30s. Similarly, whilst one might associate mental disorders with violent behaviour, they point out that in many cases serial killers are not actual insane by the usual legal or medical definitions. Insanity and murderous impulses may indeed be linked, but such a link is by no means always present. In any event, it is not possible to categorise all serial killers in the same way, since their motivations and perceived influences on behaviour will differ from one to another. They exemplify this by pointing out that after the fact, witnesses frequently mention that they sensed "something not right" about serial killers who presented themselves as average, ordinary people, but these feelings of "wrongness" ...
