Each of these major categories also includes extensive subcategories, which collectively work to ensure the health and well being of the countys residents. State: The State of California offers public health resources through the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), which also includes the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The DHCS provides funding and administration for a variety of individual health care service programs, such as the California Medical Assistance Program, and the CDPH creates a "more effective public health infrastructure in California" ("California Department," 2007). National: At the federal level, public health resources are offered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The HHS offers a broad variety of services, which include "research, public health, food and drug safety, grants and other funding, health insurance and many others" (HHS, 2010). The HHS is the "principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans," which is accomplished through the work of 11 agencies, with a particular focus on aiding those citizens who are "least able to help themselves" (HHS, 2010).
