Fraud, which is defined as "obtaining something of value or avoiding an obligation by means of deception" (Duffield et al, 2001, PG), illustrates the breakdown that occurs between ones ethical foundation and the temptation to bypass this inherent human characteristic for the benefit of personal - albeit illegal - gain. The very nature of ethics is to abide by a written - or sometimes understood - code of conduct that speaks to moral duty and obligation. Perhaps nowhere is this guiding principle more important than in the psychology profession of today. According to Walden et al (2003) - authors of "The Evolution of Ethics: Personal Perspectives of ACA Ethnics Committee Chairs" in The American Counseling Associations Journal of Counseling & Development - the history, development and ongoing pursuit of the American Counseling Associations (ACA) Ethics Committee "mirrors, in many ways, the development and maturation of the counseling profession" (p. 106). A reasonable person would think that upholding the established ethics of professional psychology would be as commonplace as knowing that the sun will rise every morning and set every night.
