The assignment scenario indicates that the student researching this topic has been assigned to help Hector with this learning task. The scenario offers two options for the student to consider, as well as the following issues. Three home literacy environments: Van Steensel and his colleagues identified three home literacy environments (HLEs), which were "rich, child-directed and poor HLE" (Van Steensel, 2006, p. 367). The participant families in the Van Steensel (2006) study were classified into one of these groups based on the level of literacy activity in which the families engaged. The families in which "children observed and participated in a wide variety of literacy activities" were considered to be in the "rich" HLE, and those in which children were exposed to "significantly fewer individual literacy activities" were considered to be in the "child-directed" group, while families that engage in few literacy activities were considered to be in the "poor" HLE group (Van Steensel, 2006, p. 373). Influence of home environment on vocabulary and reading comprehension: A childs HLE has been shown to influence both "vocabulary and general reading comprehension" in first grade, but not in the same manner (Van Steensel, 2006, p. 377).
