from the quality of life of all citizens, but citizens must also pay for the upkeep and incarceration of criminals via taxes. Most people tend to accept this situation as
is because they believe it performs a valuable service in keeping "dangerous" individuals off the street. Therefore, there is sometimes resentment for educational and treatment programs at prisons, in that
they are perceived as a "waste" of money, granting criminals luxuries and opportunities that many feel they do not deserve. In this way, the prison system frequently intersects with politics,
in that politicians find it easy to curry favor by promising to be "tough on crime" and do away with such controversial programs. This often places an undue burden on
prison system directors who must balance compliance with state leaders while at the same time defending the interests of their facility. This paragraph helps the student present a summary of
the case study. One might well imagine the following scenario to see how this works out. Suppose that one was the director of a prison for two years and had
worked hard to secure a reliable staff and labor force, only recently succeeding in getting the prison to a point where it is fully staffed and capable of being efficiently
