His hierarchy of needs established a precedence upon which all human interactions could follow in order to achieve the most productive and agreeable outcome. Based upon what is important to each individual, Maslows hierarchy of needs represents the following essential elements: Coping, helping, enlightening, empowering and edifying (Maslow, 1954). The very essence of Maslows hierarchy of needs is to prepare the individual for a shared existence with his/her fellow workers, which effectively "recognizes human beings as a part of nature and holds that values--be they religious, ethical, social, or political--have their source in human nature, experience, and culture" (Anonymous, 2004, p. NA). Since its inception in the mid-twentieth century, humanistic psychology has fought to attain its standing among the primary concepts of behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Professionals like Maslow who embrace humanistic psychology understand the fact that this particular mode of therapy "emerged with a definite role in the process of sociohistorical change" (Wertz, 1998, p. 42); as such, it continues to gain ground in its application. The very essence of humanistic psychology is similar to that of cognitive psychology, in that it "accepts references to mental life and encourages the study of its full spectrum of manifestations as legitimate subject matter" (Wertz, 1998, p. 42). In doing so, it becomes clear that humanistic psychology acknowledges behavior as much more than merely stimulus determined; rather, it recognizes the fact that perception is the actual essence of behavior.
