Released in 2001, director Michael Bays "Pearl Harbor" is a fictionalized rendition of a historical event. Unfortunately, as is often the case with Hollywood productions, the emphasis is more the fictional love affair that is featured in the movie than on the bloody Japanese air attack on U.S. soil that prompted the United States to enter World War II. That coupled with the many inaccuracies in details such as uniforms, settings, chronology, and even job duties makes this film a barely acceptable historical rendition of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the events which followed. With the execution of the bombing of Pearl Harbor Japan committed the ultimate error. She, angered by United States resistance to their expansion into Southeast Asia, had attacked the United States Pacific fleet (moored in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii). In doing so Japan had insured that the U.S. would not only enter the war which she had previously abstained from entering but that she would enter it with a vengeance. Understandably, Japan would become a primary target of that vengeance. For the United States to incur a direct attack on its shores was perceived as sacrilege and the U.S. was determined that Japan would pay for that sacrilege. "Pearl Harbor" recounts some of the sentiment and historical circumstance that existed during this time in history but it is more concerned with presenting the details of the fictional love affair between three of its characters, two Air Force fighter pilots and the woman that saw love bloom, disappear, reappear, plummet, die, and reemerge. ...
