a relatively dangerous thing when it is spilled into the environment, yet oil is economic life to many nations in the world. While technology and advances in shipping methods likely
improve, there is always the possibility of disaster and the remains of such disasters can linger for a long time. The following paper examines the Oil Pollution Act of 1990
and then reacts to the act. Oil Pollution Act of 1990 "The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was passed by the
United States Congress to prevent further oil spills from occurring in the United States. It was made after the Exxon Valdez oil spill" (Wikipedia, 2006). The Exxon Valdez occurrence was
an oil spill that happened in Alaska and severely damaged wildlife and the environment. In the act it was stipulated that, "A company cannot ship oil into the United States
until it presents a plan to prevent spills that may occur. It must also have a detailed containment and cleanup plan in case of an oil spill emergency" (Wikipedia, 2006).
Such information indicates that the act was implemented to prevent any further disasters like the one in Alaska and it required that
shippers not only have outlined information about how they prevent accidents from happening but also what they would do in the face of an accident. Interestingly enough, with all the
battles and controversy that rages in Congress this was one bill that saw all members of Congress support, indicating it was a serious concern (Wikipedia, 2006).
