Obesity is one of the most concerning medical problems of contemporary days. Although it has plagued mankind since ancient times it was never as prevalent as it is today. Some scholars have contended that that prevalence can be related to two factors: less energy expenditure currently needed to obtain food, and a change in the way we regard food. While the former can be related to changes in technology and societal structure, the latter can be credited at least in part to aggressive marketing campaigns by the fast food industry. Current nutritional research, however, suggests that it is not just our diet but our increasingly sedentary lifestyle that has resulted in the current plague of obesity. Millions of individuals across the world are classified as obese. Liou, Pi-Sunyer, Xavier and Laferr?re (2005) report that twenty-three percent of the general population of the U.S. is obese. Interestingly, this number increases among the disabled. Thirty percent of disabled Americans are obese (Liou, Pi-Sunyer, Xavier and Laferr?re, 2005). Interestingly, these authors report the highest risk for "heavy cigarette smoking" among women with severe limitations and who were characterized as obese (Liou, Pi-Sunyer, Xavier and Laferr?re, 2005). Raatz, Torkelson, Redmon, Reck, Kristell et. al. (2005) provide a more specific breakdown of obesity and how it affects Americans. They report that sixty-four percent of adults in this country are overweight and: "30.5% were classified as obese according to standards set by the Expert Panel on Obesity" Raatz, Torkelson, Redmon, Reck, Kristell et. al., 2005) ...
