In fact, Corsica, his birthplace was transferred to the French only a year before his birth. He grew up hating the French, believing they oppressed his native land of Italy. His father actively plotted against the French occupation of Corsica and Napoleon learned how revolutionists operated early in life. It was this training that helped him rise to power later in life.i As a young boy, he attended a French government military school where he was bullied by French students who resented his ways. Their taunting caused him to retreat even further into a fantasy world of glory, triumph and power. The school provided him with a strong foundation as both an artilleryman and officer. He finished his training at age 16 and immediately joined the French army as a second lieutenant of artillery. This did not provide him the glory he sought, in fact, the next several years were extremely hard for him. His father died which meant Napoleon was responsible for providing for the large Bonaparte family. As a result, he experienced poverty and humiliation with no chance of advancement in the army.ii In 1792, Napoleon was stationed in Paris. The French Revolution had been raging for three years by then. The monarchy was overthrown late in this year, establishing a French Republic.iii Napoleon now had the opportunity he craved.
