each individual relationship, which is most common in most of Shakespeares plays, and while the result may be quite similar the relationships are not. Where Claudio and Heros relationship is based on first impressions, ignorance, and wealth, Benedick and Beatrices love is based on mutual respect, love, and true admiration. In the beginning of the story there is nothing short of blatant attraction between Benedick and Beatrice. It appears as though they are "reluctant lovers duped into a wary relationship" (Daniels 56). But their quarreling is obviously nothing short of true interest that is based upon a more than adequate knowledge of one another. In the opening act they already spar as lovers as Benedick utters the words, "What my dear Lady Disdain! are you yet living?" (I,i,119). This is obviously quite a tongue in cheek question with undertones of attraction as is Beatrices reply, "Is it possible Disdain should die while she hath such meet food to feed it as Signior Benedick? Courtesy itself must convert to disdain if you come in her presence" (I,i,120-122). This banter, laced with obvious regard and attraction, continues with more passionate sparring where their fascination for each other becomes more and more obvious. Their words, which appear to be that demonstrating disdain, are words spouted by lovers who are confused and frightened of their attraction. Later, in the same scene, we hear Benedick say, "That a woman conceived me, I thank her; that she brought me up, I likewise give her most humble thanks; but that I will have a rechate winded in my forehead, or hang my bugle in an invisible baldrick, ...
