"Weve listened for the jingle bells in the country," the voice of Smith continues, but the audio has been juxtaposed not with pictures of healthy, happy, working GM employees, but instead with images of the displaced, disheartened, unemployed GM workers of Flint, Michigan (Weinberger http://www.voicenet.com/~weinsb.html). The camera follows an evicted tenant as he carries his familys belongings, Christmas tree and all, out of his apartment under the watchful eye of a deputy sheriff as the voice of Roger Smith extols the smell of "pine needles on the trees and the turkey on the table" (http://www.voicenet.com/ ~weinsb.html). These last words are accompanied by the image of a lone Christmas tree lying deserted in the trash. It has often been said that a picture paints a thousand words. It is my opinion that the above scene, which appears near the end of Michael Moores 1989 "docudrama" entitled Roger and Me, paints all one thousand of those words and does so in the language of the heart. With little fanfare and no excess sensationalism, this solitary clip tells the complete story of the plight of Flint, Michigans displaced autoworkers and their families. It is my opinion that this clip is a powerful and effective piece of cinematography, for in its subtlety and simplicity it displays the mark of excellence in tasteful documentation. It is also my opinion, however, that if all but this one clip were left on the cutting floor, Roger and Me would have been a much, much better piece of cinematic journalism.
