development taking place and the comfortable feeling by many that the world has matured. To examine this statement we need to look at the way war is waged and the reasons for going to war. There are currently many wars, some are more visible than others due to the way in which they are reported. It should also be remembered that not all information regarding the motivation of war are available, even in countries where there are freedom of information acts. Motivation may be obscured and justified with other reasoning. However, whichever war we look at, whether it is the recent wars that took place in Afghanistan and Iraq, the First Gulf War or any number of other wars in different regions it is only as a result of political policy that war is declared. If we use the gulf region as an example it may be argued that this was a continuation of policy by the US. There is little doubt that the war in Afghanistan was a retaliatory action as a result of the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon and a follow through on the policy of bringing Al Qaeda to justice. This followed the refusal of the Taliban to co-operate with the US, making this an extension of policy. Looking to Iraq, this also appears to be part of this policy, links made between the two countries and fears raised over the damage that the country posed to the west.
