view. The following examination of literature will summarize a small portion of the abundant evidence that the simulated violence of various forms of media is a direct cause of adolescent violence. According to statistics published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1998, by the time American children reach the age of 18, they have typically witnessed the dramatization of 16,000 murders and roughly 200,000 acts of violence (Muscari, 2002). Even a quick perusal of the Internet or the content of television programs, video games or films suggests that this trend has probably escalated over the ensuing decade. Six of the countrys leading medical organizations released a joint statement in 2002 that indicated that there is overwhelming empirical evidence that depictions of violence in the media cases "aggressive attitudes, values and behaviors in some children" (Muscari, 2002, p. 585). The 1998 National Television Study defines media violence as "...any overt depiction of a credible threat or physical force or actual use of such force intended to physically harm an animate being or group of beings" (Jipguep and Sanders-Philips, 2003, p. 379). Video games constitute one of the most violent forms of media to which children and adolescents are exposed. However, this form of entertainment appears to exist "under the radar," so to speak of most parents as research indicates that once children reach high school, parents rarely check the ratings on video games before allowing their adolescents to purchase them and impose no limits on the amount of time that they can spend at this activity (Jipguep and Sanders-Philips, 2003). In addition to video games, the violence depicted in other forms of media also produces harmful effects.
