Our understanding of the worlds seas and oceans and the organisms that live there has evolved considerably
over the years. There have been many significant events that added to our knowledge of marine biology. One of the more notable of these events was the discovery
of fossil remains that proved vertebrates originated in salt water as opposed to freshwater as was originally thought. The work surrounding this lesson demonstrates the incredible diversity of the
marine ecosystem, a lesson that is reemphasized by even a brief review of any one species in that ecosystem. The refutal of earlier
beliefs as to the origin of the early vertebrates came about when the geologic strata in which the earliest known vertebrate fossils was carefully analyzed (Forey and Janvier, 1994).
Previous analyses of other strata that were believed to be the earliest examples of this life form revealed that the fossils which it contained were in oxidized sand stone in
Colorado (Forey and Janvier, 1994). This early finding established the belief that life originated in freshwater since oxidized sandstone was typically associated with fresh, not estuarine or salt, water
(Forey and Janvier, 1994). Recent research has determined that, to the contrary, that early vertebrates originated in salt water and migrated to fresh water (Forey and Janvier, 1994).
Later investigations found that the sandstone in question was more than likely deposited in a marine environment (Forey and Janvier, 1994). Fossils of
the earliest known vertebrates were those of the Ostracoderms which existed during the Ordovician period about four hundred and sixty million years ago (Forey and Janvier, 1993). By this
