the lyrics could be the anthem for Americas development since colonial times. Allen Billington said more or less the same thing,
though he wasnt as tuneful or creative as Mitchell in expressing his views. "We are wasteful people," he wrote. "For example, pioneers burned down their houses when ready to move
west; thus, they were allowed to retrieve nails, and none gave thought to the precious hardwood that went up in smoke." Nor did any of those pioneers give thought to
the smoke that might be polluting the air, or other destructive results from the seemingly simple act of burning down a log cabin.
The pioneers also proved themselves to be wasteful when it came to water. When technology led to irrigation of fields, deserts bloomed into farmland. But at least the farms
had a purpose. More than a century and a half after the first pioneers made their trek westward, we see not only crops blooming in places where they dont belong,
but hones, shopping centers - and flora that has absolutely no business blooming in desert climates. These flowers and lawns are thirsty, too - and they are taking up precious
water resources not because they provide any real use, but because they are eye candy for the group of people who are too selfish to consider the fact that others
live on the planet. Fresh water used to keep water-hungry plants in dry climates alive means less water for ecosystems that thrive along lakes and rivers where this water comes
