A focus is naturally on European designers but others are also mentioned in the text. Numerous specific examples are included. My experience along with the literature, concludes that self-actualization has nothing to do with possessions or striving for material items but rather, self-actualization has to do with being at peace with oneself. It has to do with meeting ones full potential, it has to do with truth, honesty and responsibility, among other things. It is ethereal rather than material. Self-actualization is about fulfilling ones mission in life, understanding and accepting ones own true inner self. (This step in the pyramid is very similar to Frankls Will to Meaning. Please see Maslows The Farther Reaches of Human Nature, pp. 41-53. Also see the article from McMaster University which does a very nice job of explaining Maslows thoughts on self-actualization.) I will bring this into the paper along with another reference that illustrates what self-actualization is. You can make the strongest case for luxury fashion products meeting ego needs. There is absolutely nothing mystical about striving for high fashion products. You could even make a weak case for the aesthetic needs IF the "luxury products" were really stretched and interpreted to include fine art but not fashion. Even an aesthetic interpretation would be difficult to make in view of Maslows explanation. It is not possible to write a paper that is based on error. I will, therefore, make a case for ego needs and drop in the possibility of aesthetic needs fulfillment in terms of high/luxury fashion products.
