is an application of that theory. Co-authored with his son-in-law G. Ferrero, Lombroso classifies all women into three groups: criminals, prostitutes and "normal" women. He begins his study with
normal women, as well as with a general discussion of the place of females in the animal world. He notes that females in the animal world are frequently superior in
size and strength to the male (Lombroso and Ferrero 42). This discussion is concluded with the observation that human women are almost always inferior to the male in weight and
height, as well as other characteristics. He classifies women according to two basic groups: masculine women, who are presumed to be primitive and criminal, and feminine women, who are good,
civilized, law-abiding and "normal." To this he adds a third category for prostitutes. In his next chapter, Lombroso addresses female criminology and includes the crimes of adultery, prostitution, abortion,
poisoning and witchcraft as serious crimes that are typically committed only by women. In his chapter on pathological anatomy, Lombroso discusses his early work and reliance on cranial anthropometry (Lombroso
and Ferrero 107). He proposes that through analysis of the skulls, brains, and facial anthropometry of female criminals, including prostitutes, he can rationally explain the social phenomenon of female crime.
He observes that both female criminals and prostitutes have more cranial anomalies than "normal" women (Lombroso and Ferrero 134). He utilizes extensive photographic evidence of female criminals and prostitutes
