Since the end of World war II, growing the cannabis plant has been deemed illegal - mostly in fear that the psychoactive effect afforded by smoking marijuana would lead to use of the more addictive and harmful substances as well as criminal behavior. Many states now recognize the validity of marijuana use in certain circumstances but continue to prosecute for procurement, possession and growing. It is believed that denying cancer and AIDS patients, paraplegics and epileptics access to a potentially useful medicine that is safer than most legally prescribed drugs is inhumane. This 3 page letter is a request to Congressman Engel of New York City to support the continued efforts of Congressman Frank and others in helping to break the stereotyped beliefs that are making millions of sick people into criminals by supporting and, or co-sponsoring House Bill 2618.
