than it was in ancient times. It is, in fact, very different from the world we lived in just a few generations ago. Never-the-less, the history of the ancient world can go a long ways toward helping us understand the present world of 2010. To support the contention presented above it is particular helpful to consider the United States as it exists today. As Mallaby contends, the U.S. has been largely a reluctant imperialist but that "a new imperial moment has arrived, and by virtue of its power, America is bound to play the leading role". Being an American in 2010 is considerably different than being an American in 1810 or even in 1910. The factors which have shaped past and existing American political identity are many and varied. Many of these factors of course revolve around the face of our government itself and the factors influencing this governments interactions with both the people of this and other countries and with the governments of other countries. This interaction has changed considerably over the years as has the political identity of this country and how it is perceived both by its citizens, those of other countries, and the government of other countries. There have been numerous political shifts in U.S. government over its brief two-hundred year history. There have been numerous factors to which each of these shifts can be attributed.
