Although there is a great deal of impressive rhetoric regarding the Kennedy presidency that goes to hero worship, he is the one who made the decision to begin the battle in the first place. Admittedly, Johnson escalated the war, but it was not so much Johnsons doing that led to the ultimate Vietnam War debacle. Few look back and suggest it was a good thing, although there is speculation that without the war the world might have been a more dangerous place. Given what has happened since-the fall of the Berlin Wall, the financial devastation in Russia-it is unlikely that communism posed a serious threat after all. Kennedy had great political ambitions for his party. He could do no wrong in the eyes of the public. A student writing on this subject might want to point out that he was an extremely popular president. After Kennedy read the White Paper, things were ready to go. The White Paper was the report that recommended assistance to Vietnam. The rest, as they say, is history. Yet, Kennedy need not have made the decisions he had which put America in the midst of Vietnam. He could have taken a more isolationist stance. It was he who made the critical decisions that got the young soldiers into Vietnam. Admittedly, Johnson has more to explain. He was in office longer, ordered more troops sent in-something perhaps Kennedy would not have done-but nevertheless, Kenney started it. One might look at the present war on terrorism.
