The definition of justice as it relates to law enforcement is discerned through the upholding of law as defined by the courts and the Constitution. There are in fact many debates in respect to how justice is meted out. Obviously, there are three branches of government. One branch makes the laws and another upholds them. The executive branch is an "emergency" part of government in this respect where a governor or president can act to change a sentence. Hence, just before a murderer is about to be executed, the governor can save his life. There is in fact much recourse for anyone charged with a crime. Of course, that does not mean that anyone--even an innocent man--has an easy time. One has to hire a lawyer and that can be expensive. There are many debates that occur in the context of justice. Is there justice in capital punishment for example or is it a rather antiquated, retributive and childish system? Retribution, or the biblical "eye for an eye" philosophy, is held to an extent, but is actually weak. It only pertains to the individual. The person is supposedly getting what he deserves, but is society really benefiting from this? Some theories are aimed exclusively at the individual and that is why some of their theories fall short. They do not embrace the whole picture. For instance, some believe that being honest at all costs is the just thing to do but it is based on individualism, not justice for all.
