It has been contended that no other man in history did as much for American independence as did John Adams. John Adams played an instrumental role in drafting the Declaration of independence, he fought during the American Revolution, and he helped frame our Constitution. Ultimately (after serving two terms as Vice President under George Washington) served as the second President of the United States. He effectively dedicated his life to the country that he helped to bring into existence. Adams was also a political philosopher and, as such, invested much effort and energy into understanding government and, in fact, how the nature of man was a critical consideration in government formation and function. Born in Massachusetts to John Adams and Susanna Boylston Adams, John Adams was a sixth generation descendent of Henry Adams, one of the original colonizers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Born into a farming family Adams was not of the wealthier American class. In addition to farming, however, his father was a deacon in the Puritan church. This background doubtlessly influenced Adams interest in the human condition. The Puritan background also instilled a deep appreciation for freedom. Adams graduated from Harvard.
