in the Middle East conflicts. And, much of the controversy seemed to argue that the United Nations was not directly involved and had no power or say in the decision of the United States to go to war. As such it seemed that the news was telling the public that the United Nations was not a relevant institution or organization in todays world. However, despite the controversy, the United Nations is perhaps just as relevant today as it was when it was first started. The role and rights of the United Nations is often confusing, and thus leads many to believe it should do more than it does. With that in mind the following paper examines some of the history of the United Nations, discusses the recent events and the role played by the UN, and then presents an evaluation of the relevancy of the United Nations today. The History and Power of the UN "Proposals to establish an organization of nations for maintenance of world peace led to convening of the United Nations Conference on International Organization at San Francisco, Apr. 25-June 26, 1945, where the charter of the United Nations was drawn up" (World Almanac and Book of Facts, 2001; p. 797). This charter was signed on June 26, 1945 and went into effect on October 24 of 1945. The purpose of the UN is "To maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these common ends" (World Almanac and Book of Facts, 2001; p. 797).
