Mexican family arriving in the U.S. for the first time is often overwhelmed at the culture differences. The gape in awe in the malls, and discount stores where everything is available, for a price of course. Many time they are frugal and live together in large groups sharing expenses and saving their money for their return to Mexico. Many times they arent and become entrapped in this country against their will without the resources to go home without the resources to stay. The irony of the great American dream becomes quickly apparent. Never-the-less, Mexicans continue to seek that dream as a means of escaping the reality of their life in Mexico, a life where one often gets caught or trapped by circumstances. What is apparent, however, is that one is placed or even born within a space that is neither here nor there, a space of ambivalence which can exist equally in Mexico and in the glitter of the United States. Mexicans who travel to the United States are typically doing so in search of jobs. They are most often of the underprivileged class and arrive with little money and even littler time to "enjoy" U.S. culture. Often times, however, these immigrants can turn their heritage into an asset rather than a liability in the United States (Denver Publishing Company PG).
