Shannondales Evolution A nursing home that began operations in the 1960s today is retirement center featuring independent living, assisted living, nursing home care and every level of care bridging the three primary divisions. As a nursing home, Shannondale was regarded in the local area as one of the least undesirable nursing homes available. It perennially had a waiting list for much of its history until other alternatives came to be available in the local area. The primary influence was the arrival of independent living seniors apartments, which provided a midway point between fully independent living and the fully dependent living of the nursing home setting. Shannondale resisted this change in retirement living options until the early 1990s, when it became apparent that it could not continue as it had operated for a generation. Today Shannondale is no longer merely a nursing home, but rather exists as a full retirement community that accommodates seniors in all health or economic positions (McGinn and Murr, 2006). All of this development in the past several years has led to a restatement of Shannondales mission. From offering only skilled nursing facility (SNF) services, Shannondale now has adjusted its mission to offer a full range of living arrangement alternatives for those over the age of 55, retaining the high quality for which the original SNF was known in the past and providing peace of mind for seniors and their families.
