A prime example in reality comes when one considers how many "average" people in Germany in WWII ultimately found themselves involved in many evil acts. Shakespeare was an incredibly author who seemed to truly understand how common individuals could, under the right circumstances, become evil individuals, or engage in evil actions. One of his prime examples is that of Macbeth. In this character the reader or audience sees a character whose dreams become a dreadful reality. Although Macbeth at first is regarded as a great hero, his ambition leads to his eventual downfall as he grows more evil in his pursuit of power. Macbeth and the Human Potential for Evil In the beginning of Shakespeares play the audience comes to know that Macbeth is highly regarded and respected by others. He is apparently a heroic figure, a good leader, and a brave and faithful soldier. "For brave Macbeth--well he deserves that name--Disdaining fortune, with his brandishd steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valours minion carved out his passage" (Shakespeare I ii). And then when he is informed that he will be king he confides in his friend that if it is to be he will surely not do anything to hurry it along, stating, "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me, Without my stir" (Shakspeare I iii). In these lines we see an honorable man, a man who is perfectly content serving his ruler and being a soldier. Things begin to change for Macbeth quite drastically when he tells his wife about the prophecy.
