realizing that once a city hosts the Olympics, the money will come. A Barcelona university published report on the economic impact of the games includes the following introduction: "Barcelonas dream of hosting an Olympic Games which would achieve the highest levels of human and sporting quality was fulfilled. In the process, the city itself underwent an impressive urban transformation" ("The economic impact of the Barcelona Olympic Games," 2005, p. 5). Barcelona is often used as a model of study when it comes to issues concerning the profitability of Olympic games. Barcelona certainly has made a dramatic impact. The Economist, for example, reports that all cities hosting the Olympics now enhance the reputation off the bat ("Make or Break," 2000). As far as Barcelona is concerned, one of the major changes was that "as a result of the 1992 Olympics" the city "completely redeveloped its waterfront" ("Make or Break," 2000). This is a significant change. Barnes (2007) writes: "Barcelona has gone down in history as the city that used the Olympics for renewal as no city has ever done before" (p.76). Barcelona has provided a great deal of enhancements in terms of redevelopment. The waterfront was first developed but things took off from there. A dramatic change is also that, right after the event, unemployment fell significantly (Barnes, 2007). Indeed, it is not just the after effect that matters. In this case, unemployment dropped as soon as the city was awarded the games (Barnes, 2007). People began to gain confidence in the local economy right away. During the years after the games, this effect would continue (Barnes, 2007). Things improved drastically.
