He wondered if in fact, after such a horrific event, whether or not parts would be able to be delivered on time (Ball, 2001). He was not alone. There had been problems at Ford for example, where things were shut down for a week, but at Chrysler, the problems only lasted a few hours (Ball, 2001). 9/11 shut a lot of things down and everyone had to cope with slowdowns and losses as a result. However, the author highlights the notion that the incident demonstrates the problems with just in time management (Ball, 2001). Just in time inventory management is something that suggests a warehouse need not be a stockroom. Parts can be ordered when needed. Similar to print on demand strategies, when books are printed as they are ordered, the just in time paradigm is ideal for certain types of businesses. Yet, when something occurs to disrupt transportation or communications, the just in time strategy can cost companies money. Ball (2001) explains that this type of management system helps by minimizing warehousing costs. How does JIT accomplish this? When a firm is engaging in manufacturing, they need to purchase parts. Perhaps they order dozens of items when they really do not know if all parts will have to be utilized. Yet, when purchasing a lot of equipment and parts, there has to be storage space. This means that there needs to be buildings or a place to store everything they order. Keeping a large inventory mandates other costs as well.
