the development of new medicines is both grand and far-reaching. That artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral component of medical advancement speaks to the growing need for machines that can start with a basis of mans knowledge and aptitude and expound upon it with self-learning abilities. "Interest in medical expert systems, neural networks and other artificial intelligence techniques is on the increase as more healthcare providers realise their potential, and engineers and scientists are discovering that medicine and healthcare are very fertile areas for developing new, or applying existing, intelligent algorithms to real problems. Intelligent systems make it possible to capture expert medical knowledge and to discover new knowledge" (World Scientific Publishing, 2003). The impact of AI upon society as a whole has the potential for greatness and has, in fact, already begun to demonstrate such possibility, with the development of new medicines reflecting the positive side of having devices outreason and outlearn the human mind. The advancement of medical technology would be nowhere without computers, which have become a significant part of every aspect of life; indeed, there is no denying their very presence has drastically altered humanitys existence since the mid to late 1940s. Through a number of technological developments, computers have not only become integral components of daily life, but they have also been successfully assimilated into medical diagnosis and treatment, with particular emphasis upon the development of new medicines (Ifeachor et al, 1999). Since 1945, there have been two monumental discoveries responsible for launching computers into an entirely new realm of acceptance and, thus, the start of the computer revolution: the transistor and the microprocessor (Hoyle, 2003). The invention of these two implements was instrumental in integrating the computer from the fringes of society to its accepted status within ...
