The military has always said that it wants to secure good housing for both married and single sailors, but in the end, it seems that the larger stipend for married sailors goes further. The ideology of paying married military personnel more goes to the idea that they may have families to support. Throughout history, in the civilian world, men would get much more money for their work than women. They were also in industries that women could not get into. The thinking was that men had families to support and a single woman did not have to worry about such things. She only had herself to pay for and that was only until a man would come and sweep her off her feet. Fast forward to 2006 and things are dramatically different. Both men and women have careers. Some are in gay relationships and some choose the single life. The reason for the differential in the Navy is that the question of support comes up. Yet, in this day and age, that idea is less appealing. The traditional nuclear family is slowing fading and replaced by new paradigms. Hence, because of that new reality, it is unfair for married sailors to get more money for housing. It is an antiquated notion that is attached to old stereotypes. Another point is that the differential between a slightly larger abode to support a family or just a spouse, is not much more costly than a one bedroom or studio apartment. In other words, when looking for housing, one may see for example a one bedroom unit for $900 and a two bedroom unit for $1000. The differential is only scant.
