History of Vaccines In understanding some of the history of vaccines it is perhaps important to understand something of how vaccines slowly emerged, prior to true scientific discovery. One author indicates how "It has been recognized for centuries that some diseases never reinfect a person after recovery. Smallpox was the first disease people tried to prevent by intentionally inoculating themselves with infected matter" (Smithsonian National Museum of American History). Such practices have been dated back to China prior to 200 BC (Smithsonian National Museum of American History). Such information clearly suggests an understanding of how to avoid getting some horrific disease, or understanding how particular diseases work. Further along in history, in 1796, came an event wherein a doctor named Edward Jenner purposefully put infected matter in a childs skin: "Jenner inoculated a young boy in England and successfully prevented him from getting smallpox. Jenner used a lancet to scratch some infected material from a woman with cowpox (similar to smallpox) under the boys skin" (Smithsonian National Museum of American History). In this one can see that humans and animals have long been used together in some ways, in order to create vaccinations and medications. One author indicates how "Foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccines were among the first vaccines to be developed, beginning at the end of the 19th Century" (Pastoret).
