The Hindu religious tradition is characterized by a diversity of unique sacred elements. Each has tremendous significance and meaning. These include elements such as fire, water, and the Hindu trimurti. As would be expected, tremendous insight into the sacred elements of Hindu tradition can be found in the sacred text of the tradition. One particularly important example is the "Bhagavad Gita", one component of the Mahabharata, the sacred text of the Hindu religion. The Hindu religion is a religion in which the complex theology is administered by an elite priesthood. That theology contains numerous distinct yet interrelated elements. In the Hindu trimurti the Brahma represents the creator the Vishnu the sustainer, and the Shiva the destroyer/regenerator. These three gods denote ritualistic importance on a number elements in Hindu, one of the more obvious of which is the number three. Fire (symbolized by Syena),in turn, represents purification. It is a central focus in numerous Hindu ceremonies. The marriage ceremony, for example, features the couple dancing around the fire in a clockwise direction. Water (Matritamah) represents the feminine or maternal aspects of life in the Hindu tradition. An integral function of the "Bhagavad Gita" was the distinction of the non-spiritual from the spiritual aspects of human existence. A Sanskrit poem, this document is interesting from a number of regards, not the least of which is the manner in which it defines the relationship between ritual and the ultimate destination of the soul.
