through Heinrich that the reader learns a great deal about the factors that helped to mold Robert and to create the present moment that is detailed in the novel. Heinrich Faehmel comes across as far less cold and aloof then does his son, Robert, the main protagonist. This may be because Heinrich, unlike Robert, is something of an upstart. To acquire his fortune, and "make it" in the world he carefully constructed a legend of style, regularity, and trustworthiness around himself like a mantle. Heinrich married the "right" girl, and became wealthy and influential. But he did not lose his soul in the process, something that Boll infers happens frequently. With the context of the Faehmel family, Boll succeeds in defining "order" in ways that differentiate it from the brutality of the Nazi era. It is from his father that Robert Faehmel developed his love of order, which is associated with caring and justice, and a sense of doing ones duty to others. This intense devotion to order is seen when Heinrich states "Old fool that I am, I still go to the Caf? Kroner every morning and eat my paprika cheese, even though Ive long since stopped liking it. I owe it to my contemporaries not to ruin my legend" (89). He doesnt even like the cheese anymore, but he continues to follow his routine because it fits with his sense of order and what he must do in order for order to be maintained. The "sacrament of the buffalo" is a term that refers to the powerful of the world. Specifically, it refers to the exploiters, those who would subdue others. In this context, it also refers to Germanys militarist and nationalist establishment, which are the institutions that led Germany to its ruin. ...
