But there was more to this period of the late teens 20s and 30s than people earning a ton of money than losing their jobs. Ellis W. Hawleys book The Great War and the Search for a Modern Order: A History of the American People and Their Institutions 1917-1933 explains how the 1920s was more than simply a frivolous era complete with flappers, speakeasies and prohibition. This book does a good job explaining a specific era, a time during which America was still testing out its youth, even while moving to an uneasy maturity. Even as a persons late teens and 20s represents a "coming of age" time, Hawleys book describes, in a good and easy-to-read detail, the coming of age of a country that was just learning to flex its muscles. At the beginning of 1917, the United States found itself dragged into a World War it originally hadnt wanted any part of. The major reason for the participation was, of course, the sinking of the Lusitania. But the war, according to Hawley, also kicked off something else that was interesting - the worlds first mass consumption economy. The Industrial Revolution had been underway for less than two decades, and the war industry had been humming along since 1914, churning out weapons for allies. Now the U.S. was prepared to churn out young men as well. But two years later, at the wars end, the U.S. was faced with the challenging task of adapting the wartime economy to peacetime, according to Hawley. At the time, ...
