about others around him in his family. John is a boy who has just turned 14 and is examining many things about his life. As with any character in a novel there are conflicts that come from within and conflicts that are external which ultimately caused by outside forces and individuals. The following paper examines his external conflicts. Go Tell it on the Mountain In the beginning of the novel the reader gets the impression, in the first paragraph, that one of his external conflicts involves religion. It is also a section that seems to summarize what he desires, or thinks he desires due to those outside forces. "Everyone had always said that John would be a preacher when he grew up, just like his father. It had been said so often that John, without ever thinking about it, had come to believe it himself" (Baldwin 3). But that morning, the morning he turned 14, he began to think about this consciously. This is clearly an issue that has come to John externally, without his even really knowing, and as he turned 14 he began to examine external pressure that may not truly reflect what he wanted. A bit further on one sees that John remembers another time which has caused him to think of himself as incredibly special: "In this world John, who was, his father said, ugly, who was always the smallest boy in his class, and who had no friends, became immediately beautiful, tall and popular" (Baldwin 14). This speaks of a world that he envisions where he is happy with himself and a world where he belongs.
