something obscured. Many people have heard of gene therapy. Wivel would see it as " the insertion of functioning genes into a persons cells, either to correct an inborn genetic error or to impart a new function to the cell" (Murray, 2001, p. 15). What "somatic cell gene therapy" actually is has to do with the application of "recombinant DNA technology" (Murray, 2001, p. 15). It should be explained that the somatic cells are actually non-reproductive cells (Murray, 2001). They are not for example germ-line cells that can multiply (Murray, 2001). This is an important distinction. If cells are able to multiply they can do things that perhaps the scientists did not intend. They are not controllable. It should also be noted that recombinant DNA are actually DNA molecules where sequences that are not naturally contiguous have been juxtaposed by manipulations (Murray, 2001). The different sequences however may come from different organisms (Murray, 2001). Wivel thinks of genes like drugs, and so, the author explains that unlike other forms of drug therapy, genetic material is not akin to taking a pill (Murray, 2001). There are complications and procedures that must be adhered to; gene therapy is a form of treatment, but it is at a higher level than typical drug therapy. Genes must be placed inside of a cells nucleus (Murray, 2001). One can imagine that this is a serious undertaking. It involves injecting material into cells, something that has potentially dangerous effects. The dangers have rendered gene therapy somewhat controversial. Stem cell research has been quite controversial of late, which makes gene therapy somewhat problematic. Additionally, while some progress has been made on this front, not all of the kinks have been worked out to render this a viable choice for treatment of many debilitating ...
