Surprisingly enough, the film industry did continue throughout this German occupation with the support of the government of France, and without the support of France in an underground movement. In the following paper we examine the film industry of France during the German occupation. French Cinema Under German Occupation In first understanding some of the conditions experienced in the film industry of France during this tumultuous period we examine "Cinema of Paradox" by Evelyn Ehrlich. In this work, focused on the film industry during German occupation, Ehrlich (1985) indicates that "Mobilization created havoc in all but war-related industries. The film indsutry was not spared" (p. 1). She cites that "Twenty films, in various stages of production, were shut down as actors, technicians and production staff were called up to their units. Exhibition of films was curtailed when Parisian theaters were forced to close for an 8 p.m. curfew, mandated in anticipation of German bombing attacks" (Ehrlich, 1985; p. 1). However, it also becomes apparent that the French had learned something from WWI when many industries were shut down and harmed the nation. As such, "the French government, recognizing the need to entertain the troops and the civilian population, allowed certain film productions to begin once more" (Ehrlich, 1985; p. 2). But, industry and the positive positioning it offered from an international perspective was not the only incentive for keeping the film industry alive: "The government had other reasons for encouraging renewed production...French leaders did not want to see the French film product eliminated from the international market.
