There is little disagreement that the EU is going to get larger, however, as well as advantages there are also disadvantages to expansion. The main benefit of membership is seen as open access that is free of all barriers to the largest single economic market in the world, larger than even the US. For many developing countries, or those with poorer economies access to markets where they will have a cost advantages is a key motivation and the history of many nations such as Ireland have proven the benefits of economic growth associated with membership. There are many potential problems of the proposed increased membership of the European Union. The first is the reality of administering an even bigger union with a diverse range of cultures and political systems. This can be troublesome at present as there is no single point of contact for any country to the Union, but a range depending on the nature of the contact needed. Therefore with additional countries the scope for administrative problems can be seen to increase, especially when some of the countries wishing to join may not have the strong administrative backgrounds that most existing members already have. The issue of the actual funding of membership also has to be considered. All members of the Union make a contribution to the upkeep of the union. These funds are also used, apart from the administration and wages of the parliamentary staff to fund subsides such as those made under common agricultural policy.
