In the past there have been fashions and trends towards particular types of statement, for example during the 1990s it became very common and desirable for company to have a mission statement. It was seen as an effective way of communicating, in a clear and concise manner what the mission and purpose of the company was (Mintzberg et al., 2003). The same may be said of an environmental policy statement, it is an effective way of communicating with both internal and external stakeholders the environmental policy of the company. The purpose, or motivation, behind writing the statement and the way that effectiveness can be assessed will reflect the underlying goals of the organizations Environmental strategy. For example, some organizations may undertake an environmental strategy with the aim of creating a more positive public relations image, in order to increase sales through its enhanced target market perception of the company and its values (Hooley et al., 2003 ). In other situations there may be other motivations behind the desire to write an effective policy statement, it may be to communicate values to enhance performance internally, or a simple method of communicating information regarding the company and any positive benefits in marketing terms may be a benefit for not the primary motivation behind making the statement (Baron, 2005). Therefore, for any environment policy statement to be effective it is essential that it is able to communicate effectively with his target market.
